Book Review Pict

Scott jam-packs a bunch of useful information into an easy to comprehend read, in which he organizes in the form of a “how two.” As I was reading Scott’s text, I felt as if he was meeting readers to where they are in regards to their knowledge of how PR and Marketing practices were done in the past and where the practice is going with the incorporation of social media. Scott also incorporates lots of context and examples throughout his text which builds his credibility to readers.

Scott organizes his text in the form of a manual. The overall structure of the text goes in relevance of each topic. Each chapter is presented in the form of a broad topic and then organized into smaller sub topics. This is useful for readers as they can simply flip to the chapter which specifies the specific topic they would like to learn about and the information is clearly displayed for them.

Some of the topics covered in Scott’s text are:

  • The old Rules of Marketing and PR are Ineffective in an online world.
  • The New Rules of Marketing and PR.
  • Reaching your Buyers Directly.
  • Social Media and your targeted audience.
  • Blogs: Tapping Millions of Evangelist’s to tell your story.
  • Audio and Video Drive Action
  • Going Viral: The Web helps audiences catch the fever.
  • The Content-Rich Website
  • Marketing and PR in real time.

After reading Scott’s text, I gained a better grasp on my knowledge around marketing and public relations. I use to think that using social media was really risky and did more harm than good, but after reading through Scott’s ideas and examples I became more aware of the direction marketing and public relations practitioners are moving in. I now see all the great benefits and value in incorporating social media to meet my consumers at the level they are at.

I highly recommend anyone currently in the field or looking to study the field of public relations and marketing should read Scott’s text as it is a truly beneficial source of information.

The rules of media relations have taken a shift on the way organizations practice public relations. As a society, we have evolved into incorporating the use of social media in our everyday life, and that has also played a role in the way consumers view organizations and generate opinions about organizations. Being that consumers are constantly engaged in Twitter, Facebook and Google+, organizations need to be aware of the rules of media relations and learn how to properly incorporate them in our everyday PR practices.

First impressions are everything especially when it comes to an organization and the product they are selling. Using social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter give companies a chance to reach put to a broader audience of perspective consumers. Organizations need to get their products out there and publicized and that where reporters come into play.

Reporters are always looking for the latest trend or product out on the market to write about and the more information they receive, the better the story. This is where incorporating the new rules of media relations come into great effect.

Companies need to use the tool of research to their advantage when they take on media relations. A company who is unleashing a new product they are having their PR practitioner post about they need to see what the media’s interest is. Researching and understanding that reporters are looking for is key to a successful story. This also helps build relationships between an organization and their surrounding reporters.

Below are the new rules of media relations as discussed in David Meerman Scott’s  The New Rules of Marketing & PR:

  • Nontargeted, broadcast pitches are spam.
  • News releases sent to reporters in subject areas they do not cover are spam.
  • Reporters who don’t know you yet are looking for organizations like yours and products like yours—make sure they will find you on sites such as Google, and industry sites.
  • If you blog, reporters who cover the space will find you.
  • Pitch bloggers, because being covered in important blogs will get you noticed by mainstream media.
  • When was the last news release you sent? Make sure your organization is busy.
  • Journalists want a great online media room.
  • Some but not all reporters love RSS feeds.
  • Personal relationships with reporters are important.
  • Don’t tell journalist what your product does. Tell them how you solve customer problems.
  • Follow journalist on Twitter to learn what interest them.
  • Does the reporter have a blog? Read it. Comment on it. Before you pitch, read or listen to it or watch the publications or radio program or TVF show you will be pitching to.
  • Once you know what a reporter is interested in, send her an individualized pitch crafted especially for her needs.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization, or as many public relations professionals refer to it as SEO, is a technique in which companies use strategies, tactics and methods to increase the numbers of visitors to their website by obtaining a high placement in a search results page such as Google.

Why is SEO important?

The use of SEO stems from Search Engine Marketing where companies use search engines in order to reach their buyers directly. This has become very important for companies to do because of the heightened demand for online marketing and publicity.  SEO is a great  way for companies such as local businesses who wish to reach a broader audience and are looking to increase their sales. We now live in a world where you can Google just about anything and placing an order is just a click away. SEO has given businesses the opportunity to grow and engage with their consumers on a whole new level of customer service.

I’m interested; where do I begin?

Incorporating SEO into your marketing techniques is simple and easy as long as you are constantly doing your research and keep up to date on who your main consumers are. All you need to do is create a brand for your company such as a hashtag where you have your PR representatives post throughout different social media channels. This will create a frequency pattern so when consumers look your company up it will be easier to pinpoint. This is also a very inexpensive way to get started if your company is tight on a budget and cannot afford to hire a SEO company.
